Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
